Bright and early on Thursday, March 1, we gathered at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the North Carolina Outer Banks, Colon got his feet wet in the Atlantic Ocean, put on his walking shoes and took the first of an estimated five million steps that will take him across the United States over the next six months as he heads to Santa Monica, California.
There to send us off were about a dozen friends and family, three park rangers, and at least two adorable puppies. The park rangers were great – they gave Colon a Junior Ranger badge and even let him start the walk from inside the lighthouse.
After some quick photos and some hugs, Colon and handful of supporters started on the walk. Most of his fellow walkers stopped their walks after about a mile, but Colon kept going. Probably channeling the energy from all of the friends and supporters there, he ended up exceeding his target of 20 miles for the day and put a solid 25 miles behind him on Day One.
We’re off to a great start… and we hope you’ll come out to cheer us on as we come through your town!
