Checking in from Winder, GA …
Walked 24 miles Saturday from Bogart, GA to the outskirts of Lawrenceville. Nice day for a walk, highlighted by one of the joys of this trip—meeting people interested in exercise. I was stopped three times by new acquaintances who were interested in my journey. Fletcher wanted some insight on long distant travel as he is considering a bicycle trip from Athens, GA to Boulder, CO. Danny was interested in the why of the trip since he recently participated in a 70 mile walk for charity. And Ed was a bicyclist enjoying the day and getting his regular workout. It was nice to visit briefly with each of the guys, and with Jonathan in Athens the day before (he has already completed a transcontinental bike trip), who showed interest in Heart Trek USA and are supporters of heart health and regular exercise. Check out their photos on our Facebook page.
On Easter Sunday, I walked just in the afternoon from Lawrenceville to Tucker, GA, a little over 15 miles. As I walked through the attractive and historic downtown area of Lawrenceville, I was joined by long time friends, Jay and Wendy Schmitt and their children, Emily and Jack. Jay has been a close friend of our oldest son, Matt, since their days at Davidson College. Really enjoyed the visit and the company on my walk. And, yes, Jay (a former college basketball player) is that tall, and I am that short. New or old friends are a great part of this journey.
On Monday and Tuesday, I tackle Atlanta. Wish me luck in all that traffic. Once again I am expecting friends to join me. Here is my projected schedule:
Monday, April 9 … AM, on Lavista and Briarcliff to somewhere between the I-285 Perimeter and I-85;
PM, on Shallowford and Dresden to the heart of Buckhead at Peachtree and
West Paces Ferry
Tuesday, April 10 … AM walk only, through Vinings to Smyrna (visiting with more long time friends, Mark
and Barrye Kirk in the afternoon)
Belated Happy Easter to all.
